The Beginning: First Spinning Wheel

Ashford Traditional Spinning Wheel

I had been thinking about learning to spin for a month or so before I finally purchased a spinning wheel. On Tuesday we ran out of milk so the kids and I went for a walk down to the supermarket to get some. On the way out we decided to go into a little second hand shop. My eyes automatically go to the books. My book addiction is actually bigger than my yarn collection surprisingly. While browsing the craft books I came across a couple on spinning. Striking up a conversation about spinning with the owner she proceeds to tell me she has a spinning wheel sitting in the corner. So I went to the shop to buy milk and came home with a spinning wheel.

Since I had to wait for my wool to spin to arrive I decided to attempt plying some yarn. This is a great video you can check out to see how it is done: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O05fXbXif9k

I found some small pieces of yarn in my stash. I liked the look of the variegated yarn and the white has a small amount of silver through it which is hard to see in the picture.

It was looking so good at this stage, turned my back for a second and my son decided to start treadle the wheel. Needless to say it ended up a big tangled mess that was not even worth getting a photo of and spinning will now be kept to times when the children are asleep.
